Attorney Mariangeli Mercado-Torres holds a bachelor’s degree in arts and humanities, with a concentration in Pre-Law and complementary studies in criminology and political science. She obtained this degree in 2016 from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, Ponce Campus, where she graduated with Cum Laude honors. Subsequently, in 2019, she earned her Juris Doctor from the School of Law of the same university, achieving the distinction of Magna Cum Laude.
In February 2021, Ms. Mercado-Torres was admitted to the legal profession in Puerto Rico and, in August of the same year, to the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. During her years at the School of Law, she stood out as a Tutor of Criminal Procedure Law and was consistently on the Dean’s List. She is a member of the Federal Bar Association and of the Commission on the Rights of Immigrants of the Puerto Rico Bar Association.
As a defense litigator, she has represented clients in complex and sensitive cases, including the defense of fellow attorneys before the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico. Before joining the immigration team at Gallardo Law Firm, she acquired vast experience handling federal litigation and defending civil matters before the District Court of Puerto Rico, especially in civil rights issues, ADA, and diversity jurisdiction.
Ms. Mercado-Torres has experience handling administrative discrimination claims before agencies such as the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), minor criminal cases, DUI defense, and expungement processes. In addition, she has served as in-house counsel for nonprofit organizations that support victims of domestic violence and develop rehabilitation programs.
