Recovering from a divorce can be a slow process for some. After dealing with all the legal aspects of it and your ex-spouse’s unhelpful attitude, you also feel obligated to explain everything to your kids in simple terms and embrace life after divorce. You just have to learn from the past and avoid making the same mistakes. Adapting to your new circumstances may not be easy but you must try. Remember that after all, there is life after divorce. But how do you tell your kids you are seeing someone? It’s important that both, you and your children are comfortable with the whole situation. It all depends on your kids’ age and capacity to understand. Your children may not be happy with the idea at first but they will eventually learn to appreciate and respect your new partner. Don’t feel guilty about welcoming this new chapter in your life after divorce but do prepare your children for it.

The first thing you must do is talk to your kids. Children often feel confuse and left out. Some children may become protective of you and think your new partner will hurt you. Allow them to ask you questions or tell you about any concern they may have. This can be a scary situation, especially for small children. Some divorcees like dating a few people but not everyone they date may be relationship material. This is why you should take time to introduce your date. Wait until the relationship becomes serious. This will save you a lot of headaches and protect your child from confusion and uncertainty.

If things are working well, introduce your new partner in a fun way or a way they are comfortable with. This will help them associate your significant other with a sense of happiness and safety. Older children may need a different type of scenario. Keep it casual and don’t overdo it. Even when introductions go well, your children will still have some doubts. Be patient and give them time to adapt to the new you. Remember children don’t understand the way adult relationships work so you must offer guidance throughout the whole process. You should also encourage your new partner and approach your dating after divorce in a way that makes you feel comfortable. It’s time to embrace your new life!
