On Sunday, April 22nd, 2024, there were two fatal accidents on the Florida Turnpike in which two pedestrians were hit. An hour apart from each other, two tragedies occurred, leaving victims deceased. The first crash happened at 3:09 a.m. at northbound mile marker 86, and the second one occurred at 4:12 a.m. at northbound mile marker 109.
The first accident involved a white 2004 Mercedes-Benz that was stopped with its lights off in the center lane. The driver was standing outside his vehicle when a white 2008 BMW approached and crashed into the man and his car. Unfortunately, due to the accident, the man outside of his truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following this tragic accident, shortly after, a 53-year-old man was lying down on the outside lane of the Turnpike. A vehicle approached the man, hit the man on the ground, and immediately fled the scene. He did not call the police or report the accident. Tragically, the victim of this accident was pronounced dead on the scene as well.
Miami and South Florida residents have recently grown concerned about the accidents and traffic. Although Miami is famously known for its 'unique' drivers, the safety of the road has worsened a concerning amount in the past couple of years. As of right now, the pedestrian death rate in Florida outpaces other traffic fatalities in the country.
According to the reports released by the Governors Highway Safety Association in 2023, Florida had the third-highest rate of pedestrian death. The Official statistics stated that there were four pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents.
Additionally, pedestrian deaths rose by 77% from 2010-2021, and most occurred at night or on roads without sidewalks. These are essential things to consider. This is a scary reality for South Florida drivers and residents as we face the ongoing dangers of unsafe drivers.
A multitude of reasons can cause car accidents; it is essential to watch out for drivers behaving unsafely and avoid doing these things as someone operating a vehicle:
These are just some of the leading causes of car accidents, but there are other factors, such as weather. Rain, snow, and other environmental factors can create dangerous driving conditions. You must also be attentive to pedestrians, as many accidents involving pedestrians cause fatalities.
In 2021, a bill was passed that adjusted the state driver education test and added at least 25 questions regarding pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The state legislature passed this bill to improve the current fatal accident statistics and spread awareness to those who are starting to drive.
Car accidents are dangerous and often lethal. Since South Florida grows more dangerous every day, it is essential to know your options in case of an accident.
